'Boat', 'paddy sheaf' in tough contest
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor with 'boat' symbol is likely to face tough fight from Md Moniruzzaman Montu, nayebe ameer of the district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, with 'sheaf of paddy' from Nilphamari-2 (Sadar upazila) constituency in the national election.
Although there are five candidates in the constituency, voters believe that the main fight will take place between Noor and Montu.
Three other candidates are Md Jahurul Islam of Islami Andolon Bangladesh with 'hand fan' symbol, Mst Rabeya Begum of National Peoples' Party with 'mango' and independent candidate Ezanur Rahman with 'truck'.
Noor is contesting from the constituency for fourth time. He was elected lawmaker from here in 2001, 2008 and 2014.
During campaigns, Noor and his supporters are seeking votes referring to the massive development of the area in the last five years under the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
A large number of voters prefer Noor as he played a pivotal role in setting up a new medical college in Sadar upazila and Sheikh Kamal Stadium, an international football venue in the district town.
New voters are also showing enthusiasm for Noor and for casting their first vote in favour of pro-liberation force.
On the other hand, this constituency is traditionally a stronghold of Jamaat and its candidate is giving commitment to voters that he will build a corruption and hooligan-free society.
Montu's voters are particularly from low income group. He has engaged female activists to move door to door to draw attention of rural women voters who may ultimately convince their husbands and families to cast vote for Montu.
In election posters and leaflets, Montu has identified himself as a freedom fighter, said local people.
Meanwhile, Noor in his campaign urged people to cast vote for 'boat' for continuation of development works and upholding sprit of Liberation War.
Montu believes that voters will opt for paddy sheaf for a change as they are tired of seeing the same man as parliament member again and again.
