Bid to Snatch Accused: Seven cops injured
At least seven policemen were injured when relatives and neighbours of an arrested accused attacked on them in a bid to snatch the arrestee from their custody in Kishoreganj’s Tarail upazila of Monday night.
Of the injured, Sub Inspector (SI) Razib Ahmed, who sustained stab injuries on the neck, is now undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH).
Quoting the injured policemen, Officer in Charge (OC) of Tarail Police Station Mujibur Rahman said, a seven-member police team led by SI Razib raided Dari Jahangirpur village and arrested Hiron Mia, 32, an accused in a theft case, around 11:00pm on Monday night.
During the raid, police also picked up Hiron’s mother Rahima Begum and brother-in-law Awal Mia when the duo tried to resist the policemen from detaining Hiron.
Hearing cry for help, Hiron’s relatives and neighbours rushed to the spot and locked in an altercation with the policemen and, at one stage, they swooped on the policemen in a bid to snatch the arrestees from police custody, the OC said.
Failing to do so, Hiron’s brother Rumel Mia attacked SI Razib with a sharp weapon, leaving him severely injured.
When other members of the police team tried to save SI Razib they also came under attack, which left another six cops, including to two ASIs and four constables, injured.
All the injured policemen were admitted to Tarail Upazila Health Complex from where SI Razib was later referred to MMCH.
Another police team raided the village early yesterday and arrested another six people for their alleged involvement in the attack.
The arrestees were produced before a Kishoreganj court yesterday afternoon that sent them to jail.
