Amphan aftermath: Bagerhat fish farmers suffer losses worth nearly 3 crore
Fish farmers of Bagerhat suffer losses worth Tk two crore ninety lakh after Cyclone Amphan washed away almost 4,635 fish and shrimp enclosures in the district, according to the estimation by the authorities.
Fishes from many enclosures and ponds in Rampal, Mongla, Bagerhat Sadar, Sharankhola and Kachua areas were washed away by tidal waves, reports our Bagerhat correspondent quoting Dr Khaled Kanak, district fisheries officer.
"As a result, we might fail to fulfill our annual goal of producing 33 thousand metric tonnes of fish protein this year," the official said.
However, the local loss estimation is much higher.
"At least 10 thousand fish enclosures were washed away in the area as a result of cyclone Amphan," claimed Fakir Mahitul Islam, president of Bagerhat Shrimp Farmers' Association adding that the amount of loss the fish farmers incurred is much higher than the authorities' estimation.
