AL's Hasan Imam faces two former party leaders
Awami League (AL) MP candidate for Tangail-4 (Kalihati upazila) constituency Hasan Imam Khan Sohel is fighting the election race against two former leaders of the party in the upcoming general elections.
Meanwhile, Krishak Sramik Janata League (KSJL) leader Engineer Liakat Ali has secured his nomination from Jatiya Oikyafront at the very last moment.
Liakat, who joined the party only a few days back, filed his nomination papers on the last date of filing nominations.
On the other hand, former AL Presidium Member Abdul Latif Siddiqui is contesting as an independent candidate.
Former Post and Telecommunications Minister Latif Siddique was elected lawmaker from the constituency on five occasions, including uncontested in the January 5, 2014 polls.
Latif, however, was sacked from AL and the cabinet in September 2015 over his comments on hajj and Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) at a programme in the United States.
Later, former Kalihati Upazila Parishad Chairman Hasan Imam got the party nomination and was elected lawmaker in the January 31, 2017 by-polls.
A couple of days ago district unit AL suspended primary membership of seven influential party leaders on the basis of allegation of running election campaign on behalf of Latif Siddiqui.
Latif, who fell sick following a hunger strike in front of the returning officer's office for four consecutive days protesting attack on his motorcade, is staying in the capital and is expected to return to Kalihati to resume his election campaign soon.
Although Jatiya Oikyafront candidate Liakat Ali is seen holding his election campaign with his men, none of the activists of the other parties of the alliance appeared in the scene, fearing arrests.
Besides, three more candidates, Syed Mostak Ahmed, Montaz Ali and Mirza Abu Sayeed are contesting the polls as Jatiya Party (JP), Jaker Party and Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidates respectively.
Jatiya Party (Manju) nominated Sadek Siddiqui withdrew his candidacy a few days ago in support of AL.
