Alleged Cow Theft: Schoolboy brutally tortured
A schoolboy, brutally tortured for alleged stealing of a neighbour’s cow, is undergoing treatment at Sundarganj Upazila Health Complex.
The victim is Rafiqul Islam, 13, an inhabitant of Dhumaitari village in Sundarganj, and a student of Class VIII at a local school.
Police rescued the boy and admitted him to the health complex on Sunday.
The law enforcers yesterday arrested Rana Mia and Abbas Mia of the same village in connection with the incident.
A cow was stolen from the shed of Raja Mia of the village on Friday night, said locals and police.
On Saturday, men of the house picked up neighbour Rafiqul, suspecting him as a cow thief and beat him mercilessly.
Later they brought the victim to the house of Afsar Pramanik, a local influential man, where the boy was beaten for a second time.
Meanwhile, the incident went viral in social media.
On Sunday night, the victim’s elder brother Shafiqul Islam filed a case with Sundarganj Police Station against 13 persons on charge of mercilessly beating the minor boy, said Abdullaheel Zaman, OC of Sundarganj Police Station.
Police have arrested two of the accused and drives are on to nab the others, he said.
The brutality on the schoolboy was discussed with importance at yesterday’s meeting of the upazila law and order committee, where Upazila Nirbahi Officer Solaiman Ali asked police to arrest all the accused.
