AL leader arrested over assault on headteacher
A leader of Awami League (AL) was arrested yesterday over assault on a primary school headteacher in Pabna’s Bera upazila.
The arrestee is Nurul Islam, president of Haturia-Nakalia union unit of AL and also president of Haturia-Nakalia Government Primary School managing committee in the same upazila.
The Pabna Judicial Magistrate’s Court later sent him to jail after he was produced before it, said Shahid Mahamud Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bera Police Station.
The headteacher, Shamim Akter, in a case filed on Wednesday alleged that Nurul Islam and two of his accomplices beat him up during a meeting of the managing committee on Tuesday.
While talking to journalists, Shamim Akter claimed that Nurul Islam, as the president of the managing committee, had leased out the school’s pond, but did not deposit the money, collected from the lessee, to the school.
Nurul became infuriated with him when he inquired about the money and at one stage, Nurul and the others attacked him, Shamim said.
OC Shahid Mahamud Khan said they were trying to arrest the other two accused in the case.
Contacted, Bera Upazila Nirbahi Officer Asif Anam Siddique said Assistant Primary Education Officer Abu Sayed was present during the meeting of the school managing committee.
“Since an officer was present, we asked him to submit a report on the incident. After getting the report, the upazila education committee will make a decision about whether any action would be taken against the managing committee president [for his alleged assault on the headteacher].”
