AL leader arested on charge of illegal sale of rice meant for poor
A Mymensingh court yesterday sent a local Awami League (AL) leader to jail in connection with a case for illegally selling rice meant for the poor in Bhaluka upazila on Monday.
The arrestee, Jasim Uddin Khan, 50, a dealer of rice meant for selling at Tk 10, is the organising secretary of Meduari union unit AL.
After getting information, villagers gathered in front of Jasim’s shop while he was about to sell 40 sacks of rice, loaded on a truck, from his godown at Bogajan Bazar in the black market early Monday, Mohammad Main Uddin, Officer in Charge of Bhaluka Police Station, quoted locals as saying.
Later, being informed by the villagers, police went to the spot and arrested Jasim.
They also took the seized rice along with the truck.
After quizzing, police released the truck driver from the police station the same day.
A case was filed against Jashim with the police station on Monday.
Police yesterday produced the accused before a court that sent him to jail, the OC said.
