1,013 more get bail on 2nd day of virtual court hearing
A total of 1,013 people accused in criminal cases secured bail today from virtual courts across the country, including Dhaka, on the second day of online hearings.
The courts granted them bail after holding hearings on 1,183 petitions through videoconference, Supreme Court Spokesman Md Saifur Rahman told The Daily Star.
This brings the number of accused getting bail from the subordinate courts across the country to 1,157 in the last two days after 144 people secured bail yesterday.
90 GET BAIL IN DHAKA
The seven virtual courts today granted bail to 90 accused in 79 different cases in Dhaka.
All seven courts started their hearings at noon on the bail petitions filed by the lawyers on behalf of the respective accused through email.
After hearing the petitions, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Emrul Kayesh granted bail to three accused in three cases, while Dhaka Judicial Magistrate Md Moniruzzaman Sikder granted bail to 10 accused in six cases and Dhaka Judicial Magistrate Rajib Hasan granted bail to five accused in three cases.
Besides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sarafuzzaman Ansary granted bail to 25 accused in 22 cases, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury to 23 in 23 cases, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury to nine in seven cases and Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Debdas Chandra Adhikary to 15 accused in 15 cases.
The virtual courts rejected 40 bail petitions.
The regular activities of courts across the country, including Appellate and High Court Divisions of the Supreme Court, remained closed since March 26 due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. The closures are scheduled to continue till May 16.
President Md Abdul Hamid on May 9 issued an ordinance allowing the courts to run judicial functions by using information technology.
On May 10, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain issued some directives for the courts about dealing with urgent cases through information and communication technology during the ongoing closure.
