60 hurt in AL infighting
At least 60 people were injured in a clash between two factions of ruling Awami League (AL) at Kumarkhali village in Bhanga upazila of the district yesterday.
Of the injured, 37 were admitted to the upazila health complex and eight to Faridpur Medical College Hospital while the rest given first aid.
Locals said there was a longstanding conflict between Moniruzaman Khan, education affairs secretary of Garua union unit of AL, and Abu Tara Matabbar, former vice president of the union 6 no ward unit of the party, over establishing supremacy in the locality.
On Friday evening, the supporters of both the rival groups locked in an altercation over playing cricket at the field of a local madrasa.
As a sequel to the conflict, the men of the two rivals attacked each other with lethal weapons the following day, leaving over 60 people from both sides injured, said Sofiuddin Mollah, chairman of Garua Union Parishad.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Nikhil Adhikari, sub-inspector of Bhanga Police Station.
