57 murdered in eight months
Fifty-seven people were murdered in 12 upazilas of the district in the last eight months from January.
Most of the people were killed over previous enmities, family feuds and land disputes. However, no political killing was committed during the period.
According to the office of superintendent of police, the killings were committed from January to August. Of the cases, 50 were unearthed while the rest could not be unearthed. Ninety-two accused out of a total 180 in the cases were arrested.
Madrasa teacher Anisur Rahman Tula was found murdered at Deopur village in Kalihati upazila on June 28. But the mystery of the murder could not be unearthed so far.
Slit-throat body of Mohaimenul Islam Hamim, 14, a student of Sristy Academy School, was found in Nagarpur upazila on July 17. Ten days after the brutal murder, Nagarpur police arrested Imon, 20, who later confessed to killing Hamim over love affair with a girl.
Former public prosecutor S Akbar Khan said the criminals got released on bail when the plaintiffs got frustrated in many cases due to the lengthy trial processes for getting justice.
Contacted, SP Sanjit Kumar Roy said they are trying to reduce crimes in the district.
