50 hurt in villagers’ clash
At least 50 people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over occupying a local waterbody in Derai upazila of Sunamganj on Tuesday night.
Of the injured, 12 were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while the rest are now undergoing treatment at Derai Upazila Health Complex.
Quoting villagers, police said there had been a longstanding rivalry between the supporters of one Moshahid Chowdhury Khurshed Mia of Modhurapur village over establishing supremacy in the locality.
As a sequel, supporters of both the group locked in an altercation over occupying a waterbody in Modhurapur Bazar area on Tuesday evening.
At one stage, both the groups locked in a fierce clash around 11:00pm that left at least 50 people from both sides injured.
Officer in Charge (OC) of Derai Police Station KM Nazrul Islam said, being informed, police rushed to the spot and fired several rubber bullets and teargas-shells to disperse the clashing groups and bring the situation under control.
