50 hurt in Habiganj clash

The mayhem occurred over a land dispute

At least 50 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups over a disputed land at Jirunda village in Habiganj's Lakhai upazila yesterday.

Of the injured, 10 were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital and 15 to Lakhai Upazila Health Complex while the rest given first aid.

Police and locals said there was a longstanding conflict between Abu Mia and Kislu Mia of the village over the land.

When Abu Mia and his men were working on the land around 10:30am yesterday, the supporters of Kislu attacked them, triggering a clash. Over 50 people from both sides were injured during the incident.

On information, police rushed to the spot and fired teargas shells to bring the situation under control.

Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to avert any further trouble, said Emran Hossain, officer in charge of Lakhai Police Station.
