49th Independence Day in pictures
The nation celebrated 49th Independence Day amid festivity today.
People of all walks commemorated the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreaths of flowers at the National Mausoleum at Savar following the president and the prime minister who paid their respect in the morning.
Other political leaders also placed wreaths at the National Mausoleum to pay their homage.
The public holiday was celebrated by keeping the national flag hoisted atop government and private buildings and by illuminating government and semi-government buildings and other public places.
Different socio-cultural and political organisations arranged various programmes on today's occasion.
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared independence of Bangladesh on this date in 1971 following the crackdown on unarmed Bangalees on March 25, 1971 by Pakistan Army.
Following the declaration of Independence the War of Liberation was fought for nine-months in which Bangladesh achieved victory on December 16, 1971. Pakistani occupation forces carried out a genocide in which three million people were martyred and two lakh women were raped during this period.
