4 transport workers get life term jail in rape case
A Tangail court today sentenced four transport workers to life term imprisonment for raping a garment worker on a bus in 2016.
Tangail’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Khaleda Yasmin also fined the convicts Tk 1 lakh each, AKM Nasimul Akhter, special public prosecutor of the tribunal, told our local correspondent.
The convicts are: Bus driver Habibur Rahman Nayan, 28, supervisor Rezaul Karim Jewel, 38, and helpers Md Khalek Bhutto, 23, and Md Ashraf, 26, of the district’s Dhanbari upazila.
Of the convicts, Rezaul remains fugitive, the correspondent said.
According to the case, a 26-year-old woman was raped on a bus of Binimoy Paribahan while going to Gazipur from her relative’s house in the upazila on April 1 in 2016.
On the following day, the victim’s husband filed a case accusing Nayan, Jewel, Bhutto and six local transport leaders, said the special public prosecutor.
Later police included the name of helper Ashraf and dropped names of six transport leaders in the charge sheet of the case, he said.
