3 brothers of Cumilla local councilor held over sand trader murder
Police have arrested another brother of a local ward councillor in Cumilla Sadar upazila in a murder case filed against 10 people, including the councilor.
Earlier, two of his other brothers had been arrested in
the murder case filed last night by the victim's wife Rekha Begum with Cumilla Sadar South Police Station.
The case, which was filed hours after the incident, accused Cumilla City unit Jubo League joint convener and Ward Councillor Alamgir Hossain, his brothers and family members, reports our correspondent quoting police.
Councillor Alamgir, the key accused in the case, has been absconding since the incident, while his three brothers -- Amir Hossain, Jahangir Hossain, and Billal Hossain -- have been arrested, said Komol Chandra Paul, officer-in-charge (investigation) of the police station, told The Daily Star.
Policemen have been deployed in the area to prevent any further untoward incident, he said.
The victim Akter Hossain, 55, a local businessman, was beaten to death around 2:30pm yesterday allegedly by Councillor Alamgir, his brothers and family members following an altercation in front of Changini Dakkhin Para Mosque under Ward no 23 of Cumilla City Corporation, the victim's younger brother Alal Hossain said.
Akter was rushed to a private hospital in the area where the doctor declared him dead, Alal told this correspondent.
The body was sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy and later handed over to family.
Locals said Councillor Alamgir's family members are influential in the area and have long been involved in land grabbing and extortion in the area.
Councillor Alamgir could not be reached for comments despite several attempts by this newspaper.
