2nd wife, 2 others to die
A court here yesterday sentenced three people, including the victim's second wife, to death for killing a businessman in the district in 2011.
The death row convicts are Salma Begum, second wife of victim Abdul Karim of Bhadughar village in Brahmanbaria municipality, Salma's paramour Sajal Debnath and Alal Mia of the same village.
The Additional District and Sessions Judge (Second Court) Sheikh Sultana Razia delivered the verdict in presence of Salma while Sajal and Alal have been absconding since their release from the jail on bail.
Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Din Islam said Abdul Karim, a businessman of Jagat Bazar in Brahmanbaria town, was strangled around 12:00 midnight on June 5 in 2011 by Salma with the help of her two cohorts.
He said the body was kept in a gunny bag in the house and later thrown into a ditch beside Cumilla-Sylhet highway on the night of June 7. They took the body on a rickshaw van with the help of its driver Liton Debnath, he added.
Police recovered the body wrapped in a gunny bag from the spot the next morning, the APP said, adding that victim's first wife Sheuly Begum filed a murder case with Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station in this regard.
Later, police arrested the accused who confessed to the crime to the court under Section 164. Sajal and Alal have been absconding after having bail, said Din Islam.
