200 sacks of rice for poor seized

Police seized 200 sacks of rice, meant for the ultra-poor people, from different areas at Joka village in Sadar upazila of the district on Tuesday night.

Each sack contained 30 kg of rice, said Inspector Tipu Sultan, in-charge of Narundi Police Station.

On information, a police team conducted a drive at the village around 9:30pm.

At one stage of the drive, the team seized 87 sacks of rice from the house of Bilu Miah of the village, 95 sacks from Abul Kalam's house and 18 sacks of rice from a grocery shop belonging to Solaiman, neighbour of Bilu, said the inspector.

While conducting the drive, Bilu, Kalam and Solaiman managed to flee the scene, said the police official.

Sadar Upazila Food Officer Tarapada Chakrabarti later filed a case, accusing Bilu, Kalam and Solaiman, with Sadar Police Station yesterday.

The government started the programme of sale of rice at Tk 10 per kg to help the ultra-poor through dealers across the country in early September, said the food officer.
