2 more UP public representatives suspended for relief irregularities
The government has suspended two more union parishad public representatives for their involvement in embezzlement of relief materials for those disadvantaged by the economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Md Rafiqul Islam Malai, chairman of Muriauk Union Parishad in Habiganj's Lakhai upazila, was suspended for his involvement in irregularities and nepotism in preparing the list of cash assistance programmes through mobile banking to the destitute, LGRD ministry said in a press release on Thursday.
In another case, the ministry suspended Shafiul Islam Taskir, a member of ward no 9 of Rajiura Union Parishad in Habiganj Sadar Upazila, for embezzling rice scheduled to be distributed to the extremely poor at Tk 10 per kg.
The Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) ministry on Thursday issued separate notifications in this regard about their suspensions.
Including the two today, the government has so far suspended 87 public representatives of union parishad, municipalities, upazila parishad and zila parishad for their alleged irregularities in cash aid disbursement and relief distribution for poor people during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Of them, 29 are union parishad chairmen, 52 Union Parishad members, one zila parishad member, four municipality councillors and one upazila parishad vice-chairman, Mahmudul Hasan, public relations officer of the LGRD ministry, told The Daily Star.
The ministry in the notice asked the suspended public representatives to explain within 10 days through respective deputy commissioners why they should not be removed permanently from their posts.
