11 killed in lightning strikes at Netrakona, Faridpur, Manikganj

At least 11 people were killed in lightning strikes in Netrakona, Faridpur and Manikganj of the country today.

Of them, seven people were killed in Netrakona while two each were killed in Manikganj and Faridpur, reports our local correspondents.

In Netrakona, at least seven people were killed and eight others injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Kendua, Madan and Khaliajuri upazilas this afternoon.

The deceased were identified as farmers Bayezid Khan (42), and Fazlu Mia (55) of Kendua while Md Atabur Rahman (21) and Md Sharif Mia (8) of Madan upazila, and fishermen Oshek Mia (30), Bipul Mia (32) and Monir Hossain (30) of Khaliajuri upazila.

Quoting locals, Md Ferdous Alam, officer-in-charge of Madan Police Station, said Atabur and Sharif died on the spot and five others were injured after being struck by lightning when they were playing in a field in Pashchim Fatehpur in Madan upazila around 2:30pm.

The five injured were admitted to Kendua Upazila Health Complex, said the OC.

Kazi Shah Newaz, officer-in-charge of Kendua Police Station said farmers Bayezid and Fazlu died on the spot after they were struck by lightning while working on their field around 3.00pm.

Quoting locals, Md Mujibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Khaliajury Police Station said three fishermen -- Oshek, Bipul and Monir -- died on the spot and three other fishermen sustained injuries in a lightning strike while they were catching fish in a water body in Gazipur area of Khaliajuri upazila around 2:30pm.

The injured fishermen were given first aid, added the OC.

In Faridpur, two people including a woman were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Sadar upazila this afternoon.

The victims were identified as Anwara Begum (45) of Moilla Dangi area and Kabir Mollah (48) of Gangabardi village, said MA Jalil, officer-in-charge of Faridpur Kotwali Police Station.

In Manikganj, two people were killed by lightning strikes in Sadar upazila this afternoon.

Day labour Ahmat Ali (50) died on the spot after lightning struck him while harvesting paddy in Pouli area around 5:30pm, said Md Kabir Hossain, a ward councillor of Manikganj Municipality.

Asif (16) was killed after hit by a lightning strike while flying a kite in Gilond village around 5:30pm, reports our local correspondent.
