100 hurt in Habiganj villagers' clash
Over 100 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Dakkhin Sangar village in Baniachong upazila of Habiganj on Friday.
Of the injured, 15 were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital and 15 to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital while the rest given first aid.
Locals said there was a longstanding conflict between Mahfuz Mia, former member of Mokrompur Union Parishad, and Yahiya Chowdhury, general secretary of Habiganj district unit of Swechchhasebok League and also former chairman of the UP, over establishing supremacy in the area.
The men of the two rivals attacked each other with lethal weapons, leaving over 100 people from both sides injured following an altercation over taking bath of a woman in a local pond on Friday afternoon. The woman is a supporter of Mahfuz Mia.
On information, police rushed to the spot and fired 10 rubber bullets and four tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble, said Rashed Mubarak, officer-in-charge of Baniachong Police Station.
