Mysterious death of 2 garment workers

The bodies of a young man and a young woman were found hanging from a tree with the same rope at Jharkata village in Madarganj upazila of the district yesterday morning.

The deceased were Sujan, 25, son of Ahmad Ali of Nalchhia village under Karoichura union, and Joya Aktar, 22, daughter of Kalam Mondol of the village.

Quoting the deceased's family members, police said Sujan lived with his parents in Narayanganj and worked at a garment factory there while Joya worked at a garment factory in Dhaka.

Villagers spotted the duo hanging together from an eucalyptus tree in a garden owned by one Jewel of Jharkata village, about one and a half kilometres from their houses, in the morning and informed the police.

Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Jamalpur General Hospital for autopsy, Officer-in-Charge of Madarganj Police Station Rafiqul Islam said.

Police suspect that the duo might have been in a relationship and committed suicide together by hanging from the tree over the love affair on Tuesday night, the OC said, adding that the reason behind the death would be ascertained after the autopsies.
