MP Liton's killers yet to be identified
The law enforcers are yet to identify the killers of Manzurul Islam Liton, ruling Awami League lawmaker from Gaibandha-1 constituency, 15 days into the incident while fear of arrest in connection with the murder case grips the locals.
Meanwhile, a Gaibandha court yesterday granted two days' remand for two suspected accused -- Ashraful Islam and his cousin Jahirul Islam, in connection with the murder case.
Ashrafuzzaman, OC (Investigation) of Sundarganj Police Station, also investigation officer (IO) of Liton murder case, yesterday produced the two arrestees before the Court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Moinul Hasan Yusuf and sought seven days' remand for each.
After hearing, the judge granted two days' remands for the two arrestees and sent them to police custody.
Earlier on Wednesday night, Rapid Action Battalion picked up Ashraful Islam and Jahirul Islam from Badda in Dhaka as prime suspect of the murder.
"Police also produced seven people after end of their remand before the magistrate's court in connection with the murder case. The court after hearing ordered sending them to jail custody," said Atiar Rahman, officer in charge of Sundarganj Police Station.
Police declined to disclose anything about the interrogation of the arrested accused for the greater interest of investigation. If needed, police will seek further remand of the accused, said Ashrfuzzaman, IO of the murder case.
Police picked up a total of 72 people in connection with lawmaker Liton murder. Of them, nine people were shown arrested and put on different terms of remand for intensive interrogation in the case.
Armed intruders shot Liton inside his home at Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha district on the evening of December 31 last year. Critically injured Liton was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The slain lawmaker's elder sister Fahmida Bulbul Kakali, also plaintiff of the murder case, in a meeting of Sarbananda union unit of Awami League on Saturday demanded arrest and capital punishment of her brother's killers.
