Miscreants set fire to 2 Kali temples

Unidentified people set fire to two Kali temples in Nagarpur upazila early yesterday.

Though the fire caused no harm to the structures of the temples, six statues of goddesses were damaged.

Sadhan Mondol, acting president of Bekra Siddheswari Kali Temple, said unknown people set fire to the temple in Bekra area, leaving five statues of goddesses burnt.

Local people later extinguished the fire, he added.

Unidentified people set fire to the Kali temple at Chak Gadhadhar area almost at the same time, leaving one statue of a goddess partially damaged, locals said.

Anger and panic were prevailing among the local Hindu community after the incidents, they said.

Senior police officials and local public representatives visited the spots, but none was arrested in this connection as of filing this report at 5:00pm, the locals added.

After visiting the area, Additional Superintendent of Police Aslam Khan told this correspondent that they could not identify the people involved in the incidents immediately.

Police were investigating the matter seriously and the people involved with the incidents will be arrested as soon as possible, he said.

Police personnel were deployed in all temples in 12 unions under the upazila after the incidents, he added.
