Markets lively as Eid nears
Rush of buyers in the markets and shopping centres in the town is building up ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
This correspondent visited a shopping centre named Matrichhaya Shopping Mall in Sadar road area on Thursday and saw a good number of buyers busy buying clothes, shoes and other items.
Nilima Akhter, a housewife in Muslimpara area, said she came to the market to buy a Katan saree or Tangail saree. The price is a little more than last year, but that does not matter if there are many sarees to choose from, she said.
Akhinur Begum of Sabujbagh area said she came to shop for readymade garments for her two kids.
Tariqul Islam, a salesman in a shop at Matrichhaya mall, said customers are demanding cotton dresses this year. They are also interested in buying Lahenga within a price range of Tk 2,000 to Tk 12,000.
Abul Kashem, salesman of Loknath Store, said many people are buying 3-piece or 4-piece dresses like Orbindo, Lahore, Talash, Karachi Lawn and Orbindo Special with prices ranging from Tk 3,000 to Tk 22,000.
Many customers are interested in buying Katan saree, Benaroshi saree and Tangail saree, with prices ranging from Tk 1,500 to Tk 20,000, he said.
Md Delwar Hossain, a shopkeeper of New Market, said sales are increasing day by day ahead of Eid, with customers coming from towns and villages.
New Market shop owners jointly started a coupon system to attract customers. A customer who buys goods of at least Tk 400 will get a coupon. He can drop the coupon into fixed boxes in different points of the market after writing his cellphone number on it.
Market authorities will hold the draw on June 22. The 1st prize is a motorbike, and there are 20 other prizes, including fridge, television and mobile phone.
