Man remanded for opening fire during Wari clash

A Dhaka court today placed a man on a one-day remand in an arms case filed over shooting at a clash between supporters of BNP and Awami League candidates in Wari on January 26.
On January 30, police arrested Ariful Islam, 47, along with a gun and 50 rounds of bullets from the capital’s Hatirjheel area.
After the arrest, police claimed Ariful is a personal assistant of Ishraque Hossain, BNP’s mayoral candidate for DSCC. Ishraque, however, denied, saying he has no assistant.
Today, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Millat Hossain passed the order after police produced Ariful before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.
The accused was identified after scrutinising video footage collected from nearby areas, police said.
On January 26, supporters of Ishraque and AL-backed councillor candidate Rokon Uddin Ahmed clashed during electoral campaigns, leaving at least 15 people injured.
Several gunshots were heard and a number of vehicles were vandalised during the clash.
