Killing of housewife for dowry sparks protest
Protesting the murder of a housewife, allegedly for dowry, several hundred people brought out a procession in Sylhet city at around 5:00pm on Saturday and then held a rally in front of Sylhet central Shaheed Minar demanding immediate arrest of the killer husband.
They also threatened to besiege the police station concerned if the culprit was not arrested within the next three days.
The victim was Morjina Begum Dipa, 28, daughter of late Siraj Miah of Mullahgaon village under Dakhin Surma upazila of Sylhet district and wife of Razu Chowdhury Jahed, 31, son of Jamir Ali of Gupsor village in the upazila.
Sahin Ahmed Khan, general secretary of the Sylhet unit of Manobadhikar Bastobayon Sangstha, demanded immediate investigation into the murder and arrest of the killers.
The victim's family said Dipa married Razu in 2006, and he had been demanding dowry since then.
On August 26, Razu demanded Tk 8 lakh for arranging a UK visa. The victim's brother, Delwar Hosain, said his family gave Razu Tk 4 lakh, but he was not satisfied.
On Friday night, the couple had an altercation over the matter. At one stage, Razu beat up Dipa mercilessly, leaving her critically injured.
She was admitted to Ragib Rabia Medical College Hospital in Sylhet city where she died on Saturday morning.
On information, police went to the hospital in the afternoon. They recovered the body and sent it to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Delwar Hosaina filed a case against Razu on Saturday afternoon.
Contacted, Altafur Rahman, sub-inspector of Dakhin Surma Police Station and investigating officer of the case, said a murder case has been filed with the police station and they are trying to arrest the culprit.
