BNP today informed the Election Commission (EC) that its joint secretary general Md Shahjanan will verify the nomination papers of its prospective mayoral candidates for the municipality polls.
Party Chief Khaleda Zia has nominated Shahjahan to carry out the election activities on behalf of her, a four-member team conveyed the information to the EC office this afternoon.
The team led by BNP’s Assistant Publicity Secretary Syed Imran Saleh Prince submitted the necessary papers and sample of Shahjahan’s signature to the EC secretariat at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka.
With the signature, the EC will be able to verify the identities of the real party-nominated candidates, BNP sources said.
Yesterday, the BNP-led 20-pary alliance announced that they will participate in the country’s maiden partisan municipality polls. But the party placed several demands, including deferral of the polls by 15 days.
Other demands include release of the arrested party leaders and activists and creating a “level playing field”.
The decision came following yesterday’s meeting of 20-party leaders.
