Housewife strangled for dowry in Bogra

A housewife was allegedly strangled over dowry in Noadapara Colony area under Sadar upazila of Bogra district early yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Rubina Khatun, 16, wife of Abu Taher of Madhya Katuli in Gabtoli upazila of the district.

Police and deceased's family sources said Rubina was married to Taher two and a half months ago when she was a Class VI student of Noadapara High School. After the marriage, Taher started demanding Tk 50 thousand as dowry and torturing her.

Recently, Rubina's father assured Taher that he would give the money within six months, but Taher continued torturing her, a family source said.

Rubina and Taher went to the house of Rubina's maternal grandfather Bulu Munshi on Wednesday to attend a religious function. After having dinner, they went to sleep.

Taher allegedly strangled Rubina when she was asleep, hung the body from the ceiling to pass it off as suicide, and fled the house.

Her relatives saw the body hanging from the ceiling in the morning and informed the police. Police recovered the body and sent it to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Contacted, Aslam Ali, inspector (Inquiry) of Bogra Sadar Police Station, said Rubina might have been strangled to death. Autopsy report will clear the matter, he added.
