Housewife strangled, another stabbed for dowry
A housewife was strangled allegedly by her husband and in-laws for dowry in Titas upazila of Brahmanbaria district yesterday morning.
The victim is Shimu Akhter, 17, wife Mohammad Hasan of Daskandi village, reports our Daudkandi correspondent.
Victim's family said Hasan, son of Mujibur Rahman, married Shimu, daughter of Siraj Mia of Nagerchar village in the upazila three years ago. Hasan and his family members had been putting pressure on Shimu's parents to give Tk two lakh as dowry. They often tortured Shimu on the issue, they said.
Yesterday, Hasan and his family members locked in an altercation with Shimu. At one stage, they strangled her. Later, Hasan along with his mother and younger brother took Shimu to Daudkandhi Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared her dead. Police sent the body to Comilla Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy
Locals caught Hasan while his mother and brother managed to flee. He was later handed over to police.
Doctor Shaon Shikder of the upazila health complex and Sub-Inspector Humayun Kabir of Daudkandi Police Station said injury marks were found on Shimu's neck.
Our Moulibazar correspondent reported that a housewife is fighting for life at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital after she was stabbed allegedly by her husband for dowry on Tuesday night. Police arrested the husband on the same day.
The victim is Syeda Zerin Akhter Sumi, 35, daughter of Syed Moin Uddin of Rasulpur village in Jakiganj upazila of Sylhet district.
Quoting family members, Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahporan Police Station, said Sumi was married to Shamim Khan, a resident of Islampur of Sylhet city 11 years ago.
Shamim used to torture Sumi physically and mentally for dowry, they said.
On Tuesday night around 9:00pm, Shamim stabbed her several times, leaving her critically injured, as she failed to bring money from her poor parents.
Hearing Sumi's screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and took her to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. The victim's father Syed Moin Uddin said marks of stabbing were found on different parts of Sumi's body, the OC said.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Shamim from Majortila area in Sylhet city, the OC added.
