Hindu community fearing pre-election violence
Fearing violence ahead of the national elections, Hindu community today urged the government to ensure their protection.
Addressing a biennial conference at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad said they have been subjected to violence before and after the election in the past.
“We [minorities] want safety of our lives,” said Advocate Rana Dasgupta.
Seeking safety during the election for the minorities, Joint convener of the conference preparation committee Manju Dhaar the election brings panic among the minorities.
“We want to live in liberal country. We want liberal Bangladesh,” said member secretary of the committee Nirmal Kumar Chatterjee. He also sought safety for the community.
Indian High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who was present at the programme, hoped that Bangladesh will continue its brotherly attitude in the future regardless of religion and race.
The speakers also called upon the government to recover the lands of minority groups from grabbers.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayan Chandra Chanda, State Minister for Youth and Sports Biren Sikder MP, and President of the Puja Udjapan Parishad Joyanta Sen Dipu were also present.
