Writ petition seeks probe into cases against BNP activists
Three pro-BNP lawyers yesterday filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its directive on the government to form a high-powered commission to probe into the authenticity of the cases against the leaders and activists of BNP and other political parties.
Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury and Advocate Sanaullah Mia collectively filed the petition saying that 4,000 “fictitious and malafide” cases were filed across the country this month against 3 lakh leaders and activists.
They were sued to create panic among them ahead of the next parliamentary elections likely to be held at the end of December, said the lawyers, who were accused of some of the cases.
In the petition, the lawyers prayed to the HC to order the authorities concerned of the government not to harass the people by filing such cases and to take actions against those responsible for doing so.
Lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain told The Daily Star that the BNP office recorded the information of the “fabricated and fictitious” cases against them.
The HC may hear the petition today, he added.
