HC clears way for trial of Comilla city mayor

The High Court today cleared the way for a Dhaka court to continue trial proceedings in a corruption case against Comilla City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Monirul Hoque Shakoo.

The court rejected a petition filed by Shakoo seeking its directive to transfer the case to a Comilla court from the Special Judge’s Court-8 of Dhaka.

The bench of Justice Md Shawkat Hossain and Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder came up with the rejection order after hearing arguments from the councils on the petition.

The trial proceedings of the corruption case against Shakoo will run at the Special Judge’s Court-8 of Dhaka following the HC order, Anti-Corruption Commission lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star.

On Jan 7, 2008, the ACC pressed charges against the CCC mayor and his wife with Ramna Police Station for their alleged involvement in amassing Tk 4.57 crore through illegal means and concealed information about wealth worth over Tk 1.12 crore from the commission.
