Elderly man beaten dead during arbitration

An elderly man was beaten to death by his neighbours yesterday over a trifling matter during a village arbitration in Bhuapur upazila.

The deceased is Asgar Ali Boati, 76, of Dighikatuli village at Aloa union in the upazila.

Quoting witnesses, police said a tree of Abu Bakkar was tilted towards the house of his neighbour Asgar recently. The arbitration was arranged after a quarrel occurred between the two families when Asgar asked Bakkar to cut down the tree, police added.

Bakkar and his men started beating elderly Asgar indiscriminately with sticks just after giving statement at the arbitration, leaving him dead on the spot, police said.

Police recovered the body and sent it to the Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
