Elderly man beaten dead
An elderly man was killed by nephews at Newgirtengur village under Kamrabad union in Sarishabari upazila of the district while a housewife in the same upazila, injured by sister-in-law three days ago, died at hospital yesterday.
The victim at Newgirtengur village -- Jabed Ali Mandol, 60, had a land dispute with his brother Dastogir Mandol's sons Bhola Miah, 35, and Kalam, 40, police quoted the victim's family members as saying.
Around 8:00am yesterday, Jabed went out of his house to appear before a Jamalpur court in connection with a case on the land dispute.
As he moved around 300 yards from the house, Bhola and Kalam beat him dead on the spot and fled, said Rezaul Islam Khan, OC of Sarishabari Police Station.
Police detained Nargis and Anguri Begum, wives of Bhola and Kalam respectively, for interrogation, he said.
Saleha Begum, 38, wife of Abdus Samad of Beelpara village under Mahadan union in Sarishabari upazila, died at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) early yesterday, following injuries allegedly caused by her sister-in-law on Saturday.
Anwara Begum, 45, wife of Anwar Hossain of Puthiarpar village under Pugaldigha union of Sarishabari, went to her husband's younger sister Saleha's house on Saturday night, police and the victim's family sources said.
There Saleha locked into an altercation with Anwara centring the latter's alleged illicit affair with Saleha's husband.
Around 10:00pm, Anwara hit Saleha on the head, leaving her critically injured.
Saleha was rushed to Sarishabari Upazila Health Complex from where she was shifted to MMCH Monday afternoon.
She succumbed to her injuries around 12:15am.
