Oil, gas protection body to stage demo for Sundarbans Aug 20
The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports will stage a sit-in on August 20 demanding cancellation of all kinds of agreements including Rampal power plant project that will cause harm to the Sundarbans.
In Dhaka, the programme will be held at the Central Shaheed Minar from 11:00am to 6:00pm, Prof Anu Muhammad, member secretary of the committee at a discussion on Rampal power plant project said at Mukti Bhaban in Dhaka today.
Prof Anu also urged all to participate in the protest programme in their respective areas to save the world’s largest mangrove forest.
A Bangladeshi-India joint venture company signed an agreement with India's state-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd on July 12, 2016 paving the way for the start of construction of the much-debated Rampal coal power plant.
The construction for the project is to start within three to four months. The plant is expected to go into commercial production by July 2019.
Green activists and left political parties demand that the government scrap the agreement of installing a power plant in Rampal as it is likely to destroy the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest.
