Clash over Waqf estate leaves 2 dead in Cox's Bazar
At least two persons were shot dead and 10 others sustained bullet wounds in a clash over land dispute in Pekua upazila of Cox's Bazar this noon.
The deceased are Najem Uddin, 40, and Azizul Haque Rakhel, 25, our Cox's Bazar correspondent reports quoting police.
Mizanur Rahman, inspector (Investigation) of Pekua Police Station, said police conducted a raid on the spot immediately after the armed clash was reported and recovered seven guns, a sharp weapon and iron bars.
A woman including five "hired goons" were arrested in connection with the clash, he said.
The bodies will be sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, he added.
Two groups of locals locked into the clash around 11:00am over possession of 100 acres of waqf estate of late Shawkat Ali Chowdhury, witnesses said.
The clash that continued for an hour saw around a hundred rounds of bullets exchanged, they said.
A tense situation was prevailing in the area as of filing the report around 5:00pm.
