UP chairman sent to jail

A court here sent the chairman of a union parishad in the district to jail yesterday for attempting to rape a schoolgirl in Sadar upazila.

Judge Shafiqul Islam of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in the district sent Laxmipur Union Parishad Chairman Mostafizur Rahman Badol to jail when he surrendered before the court yesterday.

The judge also ordered the case to be placed before the juvenile court for trial, and a hearing will be held on that issue on July 5 (today), said advocate Shariful Islam, public prosecutor, Gaibandha.

Locals said Mostafizur had been harassing the schoolgirl for a long time. 

The girl's guardians sent her to another school, but Mostafizur continued to harass her, family members said.

Mostafizur went to the girl's house on May 27 when she was alone and tried to rape her. When the girl started screaming, he fled the scene on his motorcycle.

Al-Amin Mia, uncle of the victim, filed a case with Gaibandha Police Station on June 3, accusing Mostafizur.
