Bid to grab Harijan land
An alleged land grabber and his men beat up a couple belonging to the Harijan community in Indurkani upazila of the district on Wednesday in a bid to evict the family from their ancestral homestead and grab the land.
The victims, Nikhil Chandra Mony, 45, of Charani Pattashi village, and his wife Kajal Rani, 30, are now undergoing treatment at Pirojpur Sadar Hospital.
Injured Nikhil, a cobbler, said since purchasing a land beside his homestead over two years ago Mosharraf Kazi of the village had been torturing his family members in different ways to grab the 19 decimals of land.
As a sequel to the feud, a group of six to eight men led by Mosharraf swooped on Nikhil and his wife on Wednesday morning and beat them up mercilessly, leaving them critically injured.
“Mosharraf has been claiming the ownership of my land for the last two years where we are living for generations,” Nikhil said.
“Nikhil and his forefathers have been living here for years now,” said Harashid Boiragi of the village, adding that since buying some land in the area Mosharraf started claiming Nikhil's land as his own.
Local ward member Abdul Gani Khan said they tried to solve the matter through local arbitrations several times but all went in vain.
“Although Nikhil is the real owner of the land, Mosharraf is trying to occupy it showing muscle power,” added Gani, also a local land surveyor.
Officer-in-Charge of Indurkani Police Station Nasir Uddin said they will take necessary steps if anyone one lodges a complaint in this regard.
