Beware of fraud calls: BTRC
The telecom regulator today asked mobile phone users not to share any information like passwords if anyone requests referring regulators’ name through call or short message service (SMS).
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) issued a notice this afternoon in this regard saying that a group of criminals are attempting to collect customers’ SIM registration information and even claimed money confusing them through fraudulent calls.
“In the name of relaxing the SIM registration complexity, the fraudulent groups tend to ask customers for different passwords and undisclosed information like mobile financial services,” reads the notice.
The criminal group even copy the land phone or mobile phone numbers to continue the fraudulent activities, said BTRC.
They also use different names like – BD info, Bangladesh info and BTRC info – for sending SMS to the customers with different shortcodes and try to prove their authenticity, the notice said.
In the last few days, BTRC received a number of complaints on the issue, said Md Sarwar Alam, secretary of the regulator.
“We have decided to give our all-out effort to curb the nuisance,” Alam added.
