Attack on freedom fighter sparks protest in Shibganj
Freedom fighters of Shibganj upazila yesterday formed a human chain and held a rally demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the attackers of freedom fighter Rafiqul Islam Lalbor.
Shibganj upazila unit command of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad organised the programme, followed by a procession, in front of their office at the upazila headquarters.
At the rally, speakers said unidentified criminals brutally stabbed freedom fighter Rafiqul Islam, 58, also headmaster of Shibganj Government Primary School, with sharp weapons while he was returning to his Chaturpur home around 8:00pm on Sunday night.
Local people rescued critically injured Rafiqul and took him to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex, from where he was referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Condemning the heinous attack, the speakers also expressed dissatisfaction for not arresting the attackers of Rafiqul and such other victims of the past.
Freedom fighter Bazlar Rahman Sonu, commander of Shibganj upazila unit, and freedom fighters Taslim Uddin, Abdul Mannan, Nazrul Islam, Jamal Uddin, Isahak Ali and Ahsan Habib addressed, among others.
Contacted, Officer-in-Charge Moinul Islam of Shibganj Police Station said he heard about the incident but none had lodged any complaint with the police station yet in this regard.
