Agitation for safe road spreads
Students in districts across the country joined demonstrations and blocked roads yesterday expressing solidarity with the protestors in the capital who have continued demonstration for the last four days demanding punishment of the bus drivers responsible for the death of two students and adequate measures for road safety.
Our Dinajpur Correspondent reports: Thousands of students, mostly school goers, took to the streets in Rangpur, Dinajpur and Joypurhat for hours yesterday.
Road communications between Rangpur, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Nilphamari and Panchagarh remained suspended for two hours.
A large number of students gathered at different places including Dhap, Rangpur Town Hall, Projanma Squre and Zahaj Company Intersection in Rangpur city since morning.
The students were seen checking relevant papers and driving licenses of buses and trucks in Dhap area of Rangpur city.
Agitators vandalized a bus and a truck there.
In Dinajpur, students formed a human chain in front of Dinajpur Press Club demanding safe road. They blocked a road at Lilymore of Dinajpur town from 9:00am to 1:00pm.
In Joypurhat, students blocked a road at Pachurmore for an hour, suspending road communication between Joypurhat, Naogaon and Bogura.
Students in hundreds took to the streets in Mymensingh town in the morning, demanding justice for the deaths of their two fellows on Airport Road in Dhaka on Sunday.
They gathered at different spots including Town Hall and Natun Bazar areas for their peaceful protest, said Khandaker Shaker Ahmed, OC of Kotwali Police Station.
Meanwhile, Mymensingh District Transport Owners Association suspended plying of buses and trucks to Dhaka on security grounds.
The services resumed in the evening.
Students put barricades in the Old Bus Stand area on Dhaka-Tangail highway and Ashekpur bypass near Tangail town from 11:30am to 12:30pm yesterday, resulting in long tailbacks.
Over a hundred students formed human chain in front of Shaheed Satu Hall market in Chapainawabganj town around 10:00am.
Hundreds of students of different schools and colleges joined processions in Patuakhali town and blocked Kuakata road yesterday demanding road safety, reports our correspondent.
Around 9:00am, students brought out a procession from Government Jubilee High School and later formed a human chain in front of Patuakhali Press Club.
Students staged demonstration from 11:00am to 1:00pm at Satmatha of Bogra town.
A good number of guardians and teachers also joined the programme.
A group of students vandalised a bus, two minibuses and a truck in the town.
Students barricaded Thakurgaon Railway Station Road at Thakurgaon Intersection in the town for three hours from 11:00am.
They checked licenses of drivers of different vehicles. The agitators vandalised a truck as the driver failed to show his driving license and other documents.
In Panchagarh, students formed a human chain at Chowrangi intersection in the town.
Students of different institutions stayed on Abdul Hamid Road, the main thoroughfare of Pabna town, for hours yesterday.
Many of them were seen checking licenses and showing the right way of driving.
Students of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur formed a human chain at 11:30pm yesterday demanding punishment of the culprit drivers and overall road safety measures.
Similar programmes were also held in Natore, Jessore, Jhenidah, Maijdi and Chandpur.
