8 cops among 50 hurt in Habiganj clash
At least 50 people, including eight policemen, were injured in a clash on Wednesday evening between two groups of people in Sadar upazila of Habiganj district town over stalking of a schoolgirl.
Of the injured, 22, including four policemen and the officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station, were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital. Two of them were shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated. The rest of the injured were given first aid at the local health complex.
Locals said Nurul Haque, son of Inu Miah of Mohanpur, used to stalk schoolgirls of JK & High School everyday.
Police and witnesses said an altercation took place between the youths of Shayestanagar and Mohanpur areas of Habiganj on Wednesday when Nurul Haque was stalking a girl of Shayestanagar.
Later, people of the two villages, equipped with sharp weapons, locked in a series of clashes over the issue, which lasted about two hours, leaving at least 50 from both sides injured.
A good number of shops and vehicles were also vandalised during the clash
On information, police rushed to the spot and fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further untoward incident, officer-in-charge of Habiganj Police Station said.
