6 shot in Munshiganj pre-polls violence

At least six people were bullet-hit in a pre-election violence in Munshiganj’s Sadar upazila this morning ahead of union parishad election this Saturday.

The clash was between supporters of Mollakandi union’s rival candidates from ruling Awami League, our Munshiganj correspondent reports quoting Yunus Ali, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.

Shafiqul Dewan, 40, Shahjahan Bepari, 41, Pavel Dewan, 40, Shukkur, 35, Shajib, 28, and basher Dewan, 27, received bullet injuries in the clash, the police official said.

Supporters of Ripon Patwari, Awami League-sponsored chairman candidate, and his rival Mahsina Haque, a rebel candidate of the party, locked into the clash, the OC said.

Centering the scheduled elections on June 28, men of both sides has been engaged in continuous violence including blasting cocktails in the area, he added.

Additional law enforcers have been deployed in the area to avoid untoward incidents, he said.
