2 ‘robbers’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with Joypurhat cops

Two alleged robbers were killed and another was injured during a “gunfight” with police in Panchbibi upazila in Joypurhat early today.

Three people including two constables were also injured during the “gun battle”, reports our Dinajpur correspondent quoting Abu Hena Mostafa, officer-in-charge of Panchbibi Police Station.

Deceased Abdus Salam, 50, was a resident of Jogonnathpur village of Phulbari upazila in Dinajpur district; and Babu Mia, 40, was from Puranapoil village of Joypurhat Sadar upazila.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of local police and detectives conducted a drive at Bhutgari village in the upazila around 3:00am when a group of robbers were preparing to commit a robbery, the OC said.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the bandits opened fire on police, prompting the latter to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, he said.

Salam, Babu, Ramesh Chandra came in the line of fire during gunfight. Salam and Babu died on the spot while Ramesh, hailed from Phulbari upazila of Dinajpur, was injured.

Police constables Bajlur Rashid and Selim took primary treatment from Joypurhat Modern Hospital.

Bullet-hit Ramesh are also undergoing treatment under police custody.
