15 hurt as BCL factions clash at Islamic Univ
At least 15 people were injured in a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Islamic University (IU) campus on Saturday night.
An internal conflict is going on between BCL IU unit President Shahinor Rahman and General Secretary Jewel Rana Halim over establishing supremacy on the campus, said BCL insiders at the university.
Hossain Ahmed Alamin, a supporter of Shahinor group, engaged in an altercation with Rezwanul Islam of Halim group at the university auditorium.
At one stage, Rezwanul and his followers beat up Alamin.
After the incident, a group of BCL activists belonging to Shahinor group stormed into the Saddam Hossain Hall and ransacked several rooms of the activists of Halim group at about 8:30pm.
Over the issue, both groups locked in a clash.
Equipped with wooden sticks and bricks, both the groups attacked each other in the corridor of the Hall, leaving at least 15 of both groups injured.
They also chased each other for about an hour.
The injured include Milon Hasan, Zulkar Nayeem, Himel Chakma and Mithu Dewan.
Disciplinary action will be taken against those found involved in clash, said Shahinor Rahman.
A tense situation is prevailing at the campus. Additional police forces were deployed there, said Ratan Sheikh, officer-in-charge of IU Police Station.
