Coronavirus awareness: Safety ensured, services ready at Sylhet’s private hospital
Days before the nation started panicking due to the crisis of personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical professionals and medical resources for infected patients, a private medical college hospital was prepared.
It ensured PPEs for all its staffers, set up isolation units for patients, prepared ICU and post-ICU units, managed ventilators -- the most important tools for treating coronavirus patients.
The institution concerned is North East Medical College Hospital, situated at Chandipul area in Sylhet.
"When coronavirus started spreading from Wuhan earlier this year, we started our preparation to face it," Prof Dr Shahriar Hussein Chowdhury, managing director (MD) of the medical college hospital, said.
"Since the country lacks ICU facilities, we decided to focus on that. We set up ICU and post-ICU units at our hospital," the MD said.
"We already installed three ventilators and two more will arrive next week. We have seven BiPAP machines and prepared 17 observation beds," he said.
They also managed PPEs for all their doctors, nurses and support staff, he said adding that there are 450 staffers working at the hospital in three shifts.
"While our colleagues at different hospitals are worried for their own safety while serving the patients, we are being able to serve people without any fear," Sajeeb roy, a doctor of the hospital, said.
The hospital opened two hotline numbers to provide guidelines about coronavirus and its official Facebook page is now connected with Corona Bot which answers people who want to know more about the virus and the global situation.
"Still we are working on getting more equipment although there was shortage of medical equipment currently," Dr Shahriar said.
He said, "These are desperate times and we are possibly moving into a perilous period. Government should be more cautious and prepared to fight it, all retired expert doctors should be recalled for service as the country needs more doctors and nurses now."
"Though the government is presently focusing on treating suspected patients at isolation centres, we have prepared our institution to support the country," he said.
