Cops recover bombs from one dorm
In an effort to trace the attackers of two teachers' buses last week, police yesterday raided two halls of Chittagong University and recovered gunpowder, bombs, several sharp weapons and some documents containing "Islami Chhatra Shibir's plans of destructive acts".
Two students were detained during the raid at F Rahman Hall, said M Ismail, officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station. He said seven machetes, a cleaver, 15 iron rods, 50 sticks, and seven sacks of brick chips, and publications of Shibir were seized there.
The team also raided two student lodgings dominated by Shibir near the campus and recovered sticks and iron rods, the OC said.
On September 10, at least 15 teachers were injured when Shibir men allegedly hurled crude bombs at two buses carrying them from the city to the campus.
Meanwhile, CU Teachers Association's four days of work stoppage, one hour every day, in protest of the attack concluded yesterday. Cuta may announce further programmes today.
In a separate drive, police recovered 18 petrol bombs, five crackers, 1.5kg of gunpowder, one machete, three knives, 40 iron rods, four litres of petrol, and some documents containing Shibir's plans for destructive activities at Shaheed Abdur Rab hall, said Mohammad Shahidullah, additional superintendent of police, Chittagong (north zone).
Fourteen rooms where alleged Shibir activists reside were raided, he said.
Shibir enforced an indefinite strike at CU on August 31, demanding reopening of Shah Amanat and Suhrawardy halls, both shut since August 24 following clashes between Shibir and Bangladesh Chhatra League. The two dorms were reportedly dominated by Shibir.
During their strike, Shibir allegedly attacked at least four teachers' buses, bombed rail stations twice, and set fire to rail tracks. The student body has always denied the allegations.
