Cops foil Jamaat anti- broadcast policy rally
Police yesterday charged baton on Jamaat and Shibir men at city’s Arambag when they were holding meeting in the area protesting the “National Broadcast Policy.”
Four suffered injury while police detained eight leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing—Islami Chhatra Shibir, said a Jamaat leader.
Jamaat held the rally,m first time after the January 5 election.
BM Farman, officer-in-charge of Motijheel Police Station however, told The Daily Star that members of the law enforcing agency dispersed Jamaat-Shibir men soon after their procession reached at Arambag area from Motijheel Shapla Chhatra in the morning.
“Police dispersed them from the area as they are moved to vandalize vehicles,” said the OC. A sub-inspector of the police station said three Jamaat-Shibir men were detained from the spot.
A Jamaat statement claimed police all on a sudden charged batons and injured their leaders and activists.
Before dispersing the procession, Shafiqul Islam Masud, assistant secretary of Jamaat Dhaka city in a brief speech said the illegal government wants to prolong their regime applying different conspiracies.
Through the repressive broadcast policy, the government wants to gag media. There will be no freedom of expression if the policy is materialized,” he said.
