The construction of the last pier of the much-anticipated Padma Bridge is expected to be completed within today, giving a big boost to the long-delayed project.
Concreting of the 42nd pier started at around 12:00pm today and is expected to be completed within 8-10 hours, Dewan Md Abdul Kader, project manager (main bridge) told The Daily Star.
"With this, we will be able to complete construction of all 42 piers of the bridge," he said.
The development came when the country is passing through closure of all public and private offices, and all modes of passenger transports remain suspended.
On Saturday, the 27th span of the Padma Bridge was installed, making more than four kilometres of the bridge visible.
The span was installed linking 27th and 28th piers at Janjira end.
Construction of Padma bridge began in December 2015 and once completed it will directly connect the capital with 21 southern districts via rail and road.
