Close watch on state banks' vault security
In the face of government concerns over heists through underground tunnels at two branches of Sonali Bank, the Banking Division will meet with the chief executives of state banks today.
M Aslam Alam, banking secretary, will hold the meeting with the CEOs of the eight state banks, including Sonali, Janata, Agrani and Rupali, to discuss vault security.
The chief executives have been asked to present their plans to combat the situation, officials of the finance ministry said.
Sonali Bank will install warning systems and construct walls in the vaults in all its branches to ensure security, AMA Muhith, finance minister, said yesterday.
Bangladesh Bank and Sonali Bank have taken steps to beef up vault security but as it is a big bank, the process will take more time, Muhith told reporters after a meeting of the purchase committee in Dhaka.
Sonali Bank has improved its internal control system after a theft at the bank's Kishoreganj branch, Muhith said.
On the Hall-Mark scam, he said the Sonali Bank board had approved a credit facility of Tk 65 crore but they took more than Tk 2,500 crore; such incidents are no longer possible at the bank.
On Saturday, Sonali Bank was subject to a heist at its Adamdighi branch in Bogra involving around Tk 30.8 lakh. Robbers dug a 30-feet tunnel from a nearby furniture shop into the vault.
In the same fashion, robbers looted Tk 16.4 crore from Sonali Bank's main branch in Kishoreganj on January 24.
